WiMedia : se passe de l'IEEE et fait approuver le standard UWB par l'ECMA

Pied-de-nez à l'IEEE : l’alliance WiMedia annonce l'approbation de son standard UWB par Ecma International

L’alliance WiMedia passe en force en annonçant l'approbation de son standard UWB par Ecma International. Ce standard est basé sur la plate-forme radio commune WiMedia Ultra-Wideband (UWB) qui sera soumis par Ecma à l’ISO/IEC JTC 1 pour approbation en passant par la « file rapide » (fast track) et suggéré ainsi à l'IEEE d'abandonner ses travaux sur l'UWB.

L'UWB à été en effet sujet à de nombreuses divergences à propos de sa normalisation. Les deux principaux groupes liés à cette technologie, la WiMedia Alliance et l'UWB Forum, se sont opposés depuis quelques temps afin que leurs spécifications respectives et incompatibles l'une avec l'autre, soient approuvées par une normalisation IEEE. Le groupe, notamment soutenu par Intel, a donc choisi de contourner l'obstacle.

Les spécifications ont été rédigées par des membres d'Alliance, spécialistes de l'électronique grand public et d’équipements mobiles, de l'ordinateur individuel et de l'industrie des semi-conducteurs. Les experts de l'Ecma ont participé à la finalisation du standard Ecma-368 : la couche physique l(PHY) et les caractéristiques de la couche Media Access Control (MAC) et du standard ECMA-369 qui spécifie l'interface MAC-PHY .

Ecma est une association sans but lucratif, pionnier du "traitement rapide" (fast tracking) de spécifications via un processus de standardisation par des organismes de normalisations internationaux tels que l'SIO et le CEI. L'association est connue pour ses travaux sur des normes concernant notamment les DVD, langages de scriptes, technologies de communication et électronique grand public.

Basé sur la technologie Multi-band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MB-OFDM), la plate-forme WiMedia UWB est optimisée pour des technologies de réseaux personnelles sans fil (WPAN) telles que Bluetooth, USB sans fil certifié, 1394 radio et IP sans fil. Cette solution permet les transferts de fichier multimédia à courte portée basse consommation avec des débits de 480Mb/s+ et fonctionne dans le spectre de 3,1 à 10,6 GHz.
